Safer Play
Pokies are built to hold attention. Bull Rush in particular runs a high hit rate in the base game, which means small wins keep landing while the balance drifts down, and the respin counter inside the feature resets often enough that quitting always feels like bad timing. None of that is an accident. Knowing it is most of the defence.
Set limits before you start, not during
A limit decided mid-session is not a limit. Decide the number while nothing is at stake, and treat it as the length of the session rather than a floor you try to survive.
Every operator licensed to take Australian players offers deposit limits, loss limits and session reminders. They take under a minute to switch on and they cannot be raised instantly: increases carry a cooling-off period, decreases apply straight away. That asymmetry is deliberate and it works.
Things worth setting on day one:
- A deposit limit per week rather than per day. Daily limits get topped up seven times.
- A session reminder every thirty minutes. Time disappears faster on a phone than in a venue.
- A loss limit, if the operator offers one separately from the deposit limit.
BetStop, the national register
BetStop is the Australian Government’s self-exclusion register. One registration blocks you from every licensed Australian online wagering operator at once, rather than site by site. You choose the length, from three months to a lifetime, and you cannot shorten it once it starts.
Register at betstop.gov.au. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and operators are legally required to honour it.
For venues, clubs and pubs run their own self-exclusion schemes and most states operate a multi-venue scheme that covers every licensed venue in a region. Ask at the venue or contact your state regulator.
Signs worth taking seriously
Not a checklist to score yourself against. If more than one of these sounds familiar, the conversation is worth having:
- Playing longer or for more than you planned, repeatedly rather than once.
- Chasing a loss with a bigger bet to get back to even.
- Borrowing, selling things or moving money between accounts to keep playing.
- Hiding how much or how often from people close to you.
- Feeling flat or restless when you are not playing.
Where to get help
Gambling Help Online is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day on 1800 858 858, with online chat and email at gamblinghelponline.org.au. Counsellors are trained specifically in gambling, not general crisis work.
Lifeline is on 13 11 14 for anything urgent involving your safety or someone else’s.
Financial counselling is free through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. Debt from gambling is treated the same as any other debt and there are options most people do not know exist.
Family and friends can call Gambling Help Online too. You do not need to be the person gambling to get support, and a large share of the calls that line takes come from partners and parents.
Eighteen and over
Every form of gambling in Australia, online and in venue, is restricted to people aged 18 and over. Operators are required to verify age and identity. Sites that let you deposit without verifying anything are not protecting you from anything either.
